There is no way to absolutely make sure that group authors will be included in papers across publishers, but here are some suggestions to maximize the ability of databases to index them as accurately as possible:

  • Defining a single consortium name, writing the author list (to the extent the journal allows) with “on behalf of the [Consortium Name]” at the end of each list, and putting the other authors in an appendix or supplement
    • Checking with the journals to make sure they will index all of the authors
  • Using CrediT Taxonomy for contributor statements and establishing consistent metadata throughout
  • Making sure the keywords for relevant attributes such as theme and origin are consistent for all papers
  • If there is an introductory article, having all other papers reference it in some way, either through citation or acknowledgement

More recommendations for group authorship can be seen at the Council of Science Editors and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors websites.
