Q. How can I uninstall EndNote on Windows and Mac OS?

In order to ensure a seamless installation of the latest version, please follow these steps to uninstall any previously downloaded files.  Please carefully follow the instructions provided below to remove the existing EndNote files from your system. 

Additionally, please ensure that the MS Word application is not in use while downloading the new files.  Close any open Word documents and exit the program completely. This will prevent any potential conflicts during the installation process.

Instructions for Uninstalling EndNote (Windows OS)

To complete the uninstall process on Windows OS, follow these instructions:

1. Close any open instances of EndNote or related programs.
2. Access the Control Panel on your computer.  You can usually find it in the Start menu or by searching for "Control Panel" in the search bar.
3. Within the Control Panel, locate and click on the "Programs" or "Programs and Features" option.
4. A list of installed programs will be displayed.  Look for EndNote in the list and select it.
5. Click on the "Uninstall" or "Remove" button located above the list of installed programs.
6. Follow the on-screen prompts and instructions provided by the uninstaller to complete the removal process.  You may need to confirm the uninstallation, choose additional components to remove, or grant administrator permissions.
7. Once the uninstallation is finished, it is recommended to restart your computer to ensure that all remnants of the previous EndNote installation are cleared from your system.
8. By following these steps, you will be able to uninstall any previously downloaded EndNote files and prepare your system for the installation of the latest version without any conflicts.

Instructions for Uninstalling EndNote (Mac OS)

To complete the uninstall process on Mac OS, follow these instructions:

1. Install the new version of the software on your system.
2. Wait for the information to transfer from the old version to the new version. This may take some time, depending on the amount of data.
3. Once the transfer is complete and you have confirmed that all necessary information has been successfully transferred, proceed to delete the old version from your system.  To delete the old version, drag the "EndNote application icon to the Trash bin or right-click and choose "Move to Trash"

Here is some additional information regarding common compatibility issues that may arise on Mac OS:

Mac OS Monterey, Mac OS Big Sur, Mac OS Catalina

• All can run EndNote 21, which is the most recent EndNote version. When you download EndNote 21, you'll be prompted to download an updater for subsequent version releases, i.e., Endnote 21.1 and 21.2.  If you are not prompted, select "Check for updates" from the EndNote 21 menu and update to the highest number (21.x) update you can.

Mac OS prior to Catalina

• If you are running Mojave or earlier, the system will run 32-bit software, but not 64-bit. The best option would be to update your OS to at least Catalina.
• If you cannot update to Catalina due to age or limitations of your computer, you may need an earlier EndNote version. We no longer keep the older versions on the Library's download page. Contact us at Ask A Librarian for further assistance if needed.
